Dymaxion Earth Model

After watching a video from Tested, I was inspired to make myself a Dymaxion Earth model. But I thought just having a stationary globe wasn’t enough. Taking inspiration from one of my previous university design projects, I decided to make an Earth-moon model with planetary gears.

The build was mostly laser cut with some 3D printed parts to hold the laser cut pieces together. The Earth was made as per the tested video. A hole was drilled through the South pole of the Earth and a wooden skewer connected to a motor was glued in place. The moon was 3D printed with a thin wood laminate glued over top. The moon texture was printed on using an inkjet printer. The texture came from the following site and the contrast was increased to allow the wood texture to still be visible. The gears were laser cut with the sun gear connected to a motor. The external ring was held in place using 4 V-groove bearings. The entire thing was powered and controlled by an Arduino nano on a 9V battery.
